Root Road Covered Bridge in Monroe Township, Ohio, spans the west branch of the Ashtabula River and is one of sixteen drivable covered bridges in Ashtabula County. Built in 1868 as a single-span Town truss bridge, it reflects the practical timber bridge construction that once shaped rural travel in northeastern Ohio. Its name is associated with the Root family and local road-building connections through the Whitlam family. Renovations in 1982 and 1983 raised the bridge eighteen inches and added a new center pier, helping preserve it while keeping it in road service. It remains a notable surviving part of the county’s historic covered bridge landscape.
