Castleton Tower, officially called Castle Rock, is a prominent sandstone pillar on the northeastern edge of Castle Valley in southeastern Utah, southwest of Moab. Rising about 400 feet above a steep 1,000-foot cone and reaching 6,660 feet above sea level, it is one of the area’s best-known natural landmarks. The tower became especially famous for climbing after Layton Kor and Huntley Ingalls made the first ascent in 1961, and tens of thousands of ascents have followed on routes established on every side. It also gained wider notice through Chevrolet commercials filmed on its summit and through a successful effort to preserve 221 acres around its base as open space.
