The Rectory is a narrow sandstone butte in Castle Valley near Moab, Utah, rising to 6,565 feet beside a notable group of formations that includes Castleton Tower, the Priest and Nuns, and the Convent. About 200 feet wide and 1,000 feet long, it is defined by 200-foot vertical Wingate Sandstone cliffs above a much larger base of Moenkopi and Chinle formations, creating the look of a slender tower high over the valley floor. First climbed on May 22, 1962, by Harvey Carter and Cleve McCarty, it became a well-known climbing objective and later also appeared in music videos filmed on and around its summit.
