Tradition links this tree with Captain Robert Gray, who on May 7th 1792 entered this harbor in his ship Columbia. In his honor, Robert Gray Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution erected a tablet on May 7th 1911, and Mr. A. O. Damon donated the site. The historic tree was destroyed by erosion from ocean currents on Nov. 19, 1951.
