Marrow Bone Spring Archeological Site in Arlington, Texas, preserves a spring area tied to Native American habitation in the 1700s or earlier and to some of the earliest non-Native activity south of the Trinity River there. In 1843, a white settlement connected to envoys of President Sam Houston seeking peace was established at the spring, and in 1845 Mathias Travis and I.C. Spence opened a trading post that exchanged goods with Indians from the region. Listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978, the site has also been the focus of modern access and preservation work.
