Merchant Peak is a 6,113-foot mountain in Washington’s Cascade Range, in Snohomish County and the Wild Sky Wilderness, where it ranks as the sixth-highest point. Its slopes drain into tributaries of the Skykomish River, and its name, officially adopted in 1918, honors Andrew Merchant, a miner with claims near Trout Creek. The peak rises in a North Cascades landscape formed over millions of years by tectonic forces, uplift, faulting, and repeated glaciation, under a wet maritime climate that brings heavy precipitation and dense snow with avalanche danger. It is also remembered as the site of a 1965 Cessna 180 crash that killed Wing Luke, Sidney Gerber, and Kate Ladue.
