Wyoming has a remarkable suffrage history in which women gained rights equal to men through the Suffrage Act of 1869. Wyoming women went on to achieve a series of firsts, including Esther Morris as the first woman justice of the peace, Eliza Stewart as the first woman asked to jury duty, Louisa Swain as the first woman voting on equal terms, Martha Boles as the first woman bailiff, May Slosson as the first woman prison chaplain, and Nellie Tayloe Ross as the first woman governor.
