In Laramie, women reached several early milestones in civic life: in March 1870, Amelia Hatcher, Jane Hilton, Mary Mackel, Annie Monehan, Sarah Pease, and Eliza Stewart served first on a jury; in March 1870, Martha Symons Boies became the first woman bailiff; and on September 6, 1870, Louisa Gardner Swain became the first woman voter with full political equality.
