At Crowheart Butte, conflict erupted when Crow Chief Big Robber and his warriors refused to leave hunting grounds near the present-day Wind River Reservation, where scarce game had drawn more tribes into the Wind River Valley. Although Chief Washakie initially allowed the Crow to remain for several weeks, he later sent a respected Shoshone warrior and the warrior's wife as peace envoys with a message that Big Robber should move east toward the Owl Creek Mountains. Big Robber responded by killing the Shoshone scout in front of the woman and sending her back to Chief Washakie. Washakie then organized a war party of men he had personally trained, and with Bannock allies attacked the Crow camp on the Big Wind River near the Kinnear Ranch. The Crow, though surprised, fought so effectively that the battle continued for nearly a week without resolution. To end the losses, Washakie proposed that he and Big Robber fight each other, with the losing chief's warriors surrendering the hunting lands and returning home. After taunting one another before the assembled warriors, the two chiefs dueled until Washakie emerged victorious with Big Robber's heart on his lance, securing the hunting grounds for the Shoshone. According to Washakie's descendants, he displayed the heart until after the Shoshone victory dance that night but did not eat it. In tribute to Washakie after the victory, the Crow gave him two young women, and he later took one as his wife.
