In downtown Laramie, the Wyoming House for Historic Women focuses on women whose lives marked major firsts in Wyoming and American public life. Established in 2012 by the Louisa Swain Foundation, it grew from the legacy of Louisa Swain, who cast a ballot there on September 6, 1870, in what the Wyoming State Historical Society identifies as the first vote by a woman under equal voting laws for women and men. Its subjects include Esther Hobart Morris, Estelle Reel, Nellie Tayloe Ross, Barbara Cubin, Marilyn S. Kite, and Jackson’s All Woman Council, linking Laramie to Wyoming’s long record of expanding women’s civic and political roles.
