Founded in 1868 with the arrival of the Union Pacific Railroad, Laramie was named for fur trader Jacques LaRamie. In 1870, the first female jurors served there after Wyoming Territory granted women full suffrage in 1869, the first such action in history. Humorist Bill Nye founded his Boomerang newspaper in 1881, and the University of Wyoming opened in 1887. On the city's south edge lie the ruins of Fort Sanders, dating from 1866 to 1882, and west of the city are the first intermountain ranch, established in 1869, and the ruts of Ben Holladay's stagecoaches on the old Overland Trail.
