Within what is now Turkey Run State Park, the Lusk Home and Mill Site preserves one of the area’s earliest settlements and the first tract acquired for the park. Salmon Lusk, a veteran of the Battle of Tippecanoe under William Henry Harrison, settled there in 1822, building a log cabin and later a brick house, gristmill, and other features that supported a self-sufficient homestead and a small nearby community. A devastating Sugar Creek flood on New Year’s Day 1847 destroyed every building but the brick house. After later sale to a logging company, a rescue effort in 1916 secured the land for the new state park.
