On September 11, 2001, firefighters in the World Traded Center communicated by radio as they climbed the stairway of the south tower, reporting that the seventy-eighth floor seemed to have taken the brunt of the damage, that there were many bodies, and that the stairway was clear all the way up. Ladder 15 moved upward from the forty-eighth floor, warned of reports of another incoming plane before learning that plane was theirs, and urged firefighters on the fifty-fourth floor to keep making their way up because they were behind them. Higher in the tower, Battalion 7 Chief reported from the boy stair on the seventy-fourth floor that walls were breached, while Ladder 15 answered from the seventy-first floor that they had seen the same damage on the sixty-eighth floor and were coming up behind him. Soon after, Battalion 7 Chief reported isolated pockets of fire and numerous civilians and code one fatalities on the seventy-eighth floor in the south stairway of the South Tower, and Ladder 15 replied that they were on their way.
