The Legend of Charlemagne
Lore
7
In a legend by C.V. Amenoff, Charlemagne tells his four sons to become guardians of a growing settlement so it may become a great community where people can live, work, be educated, worship, and play. He assigns the first son responsibility for civic, business, and industrial life, the second for educational and cultural expression, the third for religious expression, and the fourth for natural recreation. After finishing his talk, Charlemagne bids farewell to his sons and leaves to join his Indian friends, walking out into the night and westward. C.V. Amenoff was mayor of St. Charles from 1969 to 1973 and editor of the St. Charles Chronicle from 1967 to 1973.
