Dr. Horace H. Powers (1807-67) was one of Morristown's original doctors, and during the Civil War he traveled to Virginia to treat wounded Union soldiers. His son H. Henry Powers (1835-1913) became an attorney and served in both the Vermont House and Senate, including as Speaker of the House, on the Vermont Supreme Court, and for five terms in the U.S. House of Representatives. Dr. Powers' grandson, George M. Powers (1861-1938), served as Secretary of the Vermont Senate and was appointed an Associate Justice of the Vermont Supreme Court in 1904, where he served several terms, including as Chief Justice. The one and a half story, side-gable, Greek Revival-style cottage has corner pilasters, a molded cornice, gable returns, six-over-six wood windows with peaked lintels, and entablature, while Colonial Revival-style additions include a pedimented entryway and an added wing on the east side. In 1948, the adjacent church purchased the house for use as a parsonage.
