In 1879, the citizens of West Bridgewater erected a Civil War memorial in memory of the town's sons who lost their lives defending the government during the war of 1861-65, declaring, "Let Us Have Peace." Those honored were Capt. John Ripley, Myron E. Alger, Timothy Callahan, Edgar E. Colwell, George Colwell, Melvin Colwell, Martin Cunningham, William Dewyre, John B. Dunbar, Henry M. Folsom, John B. Gould, Charles H. Hayden, Luman E. Hayward, Eustace Howard, Nicholas P. Howard, Leonard Jones, Hector D. Kingman, Wesley D. Linesey, Francis Lothrop, Michael McMurphy, John Mullen, Charles H. Parker, James M. Pasco, Henry Quinley, Asa F. Shaw, James M. Stetson, Rosco Tucker, Elijah Withington, James E. Jacobs, and Alvan R. Coffin.
