Bellows Falls's Waypoint Center stands in an old railyard that once served the Boston and Maine Railroad. After the railroads came through in 1849, the area was built up with many storage buildings used by local businesses to receive deliveries ranging from coal to flour and feed. A tall water tank near the tracks serviced frequent steam locomotives. Although those buildings are gone, with only the old former stable immediately next to the canal remaining, the area continues as a vital rail center. Its design reflects the busy railyard of earlier days and evokes the old Arch Bridge that graced the community for much of the last century. Built in 1905 as the longest arch bridge in the U.S., the bridge was demolished in 1982. The overall layout also mirrors the shape of the nearby village center, where Rockingham and Canal Streets meet to become the Town Square.
