Chester honored its Civil War service members and dead by naming its patriot sons from many units, especially Vermont regiments, including the 1st Vermont Cavalry; the 3rd, 4th, 6th, 7th, 9th, 10th, 16th, and 17th Vermont Volunteers; the 1st Vermont Brigade Band; the 5th Regiment Band; the 4th Regiment Band; the 1st Battery Heavy Artillery; and the 2nd Frontier Cavalry, as well as men who served in other formations such as the 4th U.S. Cavalry, 1st U.S.S.S., 1st Massachusetts Heavy Artillery, 16th New Hampshire Volunteers, 10th Minnesota, 176th New York Volunteers, 125th New York Volunteers, 50th Illinois Volunteers, and the U.S. Navy. Among those listed were officers, sergeants, corporals, privates, musicians, surgeons, and a brigadier general, and the roll of honor singled out those who sleep where they fell.
