White Chuck Glacier lies in Washington’s Glacier Peak Wilderness within Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, about 3.5 miles south of Glacier Peak near White River Glacier. Since the end of the Little Ice Age, it has changed dramatically, thinning from about 1850 to 1930 and retreating more rapidly by 1940. By 1955 it had split into three separate termini, and by 2005 its northern terminus had vanished. As the ice receded, several small proglacial lakes formed. Between 1958 and 2005, it lost more than half its surface area, making it a clear example of the rapid glacier retreat seen across the North Cascades.
