Camp Mill Creek honored enrollees of CCC Companies 541, 1341, 1941, and 1943, along with Forest Service, military, and civilian personnel, for their many accomplishments. Company 1943 was organized at Miller Canyon Camp on July 28, 1934, by Capt. R.W. Williams, and Capt. Joseph Federbush assumed command on Sept. 5, 1934. The camp was then in the March Field District, and after winning its laurels, banners, and trophies, the organization was ordered to Camp Whitewater in October 1935, where it again took first honors so often that nearly all competition dropped out. The company remained at Camp Whitewater until May 25, 1936, when it moved to Camp Mill Creek. After the March Field and Fort MacArthur Districts merged and were renamed the Los Angeles District, the camp continued to rank among the district’s top three camps. It was the only company in the March Field or Los Angeles District to remain under the command of one officer continuously since about the time of its organization. Lieut. Frank B. Orr was assigned on January 3, 1938, as junior officer from Camp Dalton Canyon. Camp Superintendent John M Harris, whose CCC service dated from 1933, had previously served with Company 909 at Camp Vista Grande and Company 2925 before joining this organization on May 1, 1937. Educational Adviser Cal Patrick Gaynor, previously at Camp Big Sur in the Fresno District, helped secure a regular junior and senior high school through cooperation with the Redlands High School District, with Redlands teachers conducting nightly classes. The organization also obtained a sixty-piece symphony orchestra from the Federal Music Project in San Bernardino to give weekly concerts in camp during the summer.
