The Hale Barn is a surviving example of eighteenth-century barns that once were common across the Connecticut countryside, standing on thirty-eight acres now owned and protected by the Colebrook Land Conservancy. In its more recent past, this farm was one of Colebrook's last working dairy farms and was owned and operated by the Hale family, while the Conservancy also acquired four acres across the road to preserve as open space. The nearby crossroads date from the seventeen sixties, when Stillman Hill Road was built as part of the Old North Road for moving military troops during the French and Indian War. Later, during the Revolutionary War after the British defeat at Saratoga in October seventeen seventy-seven, British and Hessian prisoners were marched south through Colebrook along this road. The land also has notable natural value, with fields, wetlands, and forests in the Loon Brook watershed that provide habitat for deer, porcupines, great horned owls, ravens, ruffed grouse, wild turkeys, Eastern meadowlarks, bobolinks, amphibians, and reptiles.
