Northfield Mountain is a ridge in Erving and Northfield, Massachusetts, rising to 1,206 feet at Hermit Mountain above the meeting of the Connecticut and Millers rivers. Known for ledges such as Farley Ledge and Rose Ledge and for Briggs Brook Falls, it combines striking natural features with major hydroelectric infrastructure. A pumped-storage plant and reservoir on the mountain began operating in 1972 and was then the largest such facility in the world. The mountain is also a major recreation area with the Metacomet-Monadnock Trail, climbing, skiing, and running routes, and it includes Hermit’s Castle, home of recluse John Smith from 1857 to 1900.
