Nature
Crag Mountain, a 1,503-foot peak in Northfield, Massachusetts, is the southern and most prominent summit of Brush Mountain in the Bald Hills of eastern Franklin County. Its narrow, steep profile and open knife-edge summit create unusually expansive views, including Mount Monadnock, Mount Wachusett, and likely Stratton Mountain in Vermont. Composed of durable quartzite, the mountain’s rugged form and exposed ledges reflect its geology. The Metacomet-Monadnock Trail crosses its summit ridge, though as of August 2018 through-hikers could not continue over the top at the landowner’s request. Its slopes drain west to the Connecticut River and east through the Millers River watershed to Long Island Sound.
