Fin Dome is a 11,673-foot granite summit in the Rae Lakes area of Kings Canyon National Park in northern California, near the John Muir Trail and prominent among the high Sierra peaks. Named in 1899 by Bolton Brown during his exploration of the basin, it took its name from a resemblance to a sea serpent’s fin, reflecting its sharply defined form. Its east face rises 1,135 feet above Rae Lakes in only a quarter mile, giving it striking relief. The first recorded ascent came in 1910, when Sierra Club mountaineer James Rennie reached the summit. Its runoff feeds tributaries of the South Fork Kings River.
