Dragon Peak is a prominent 12,955-foot summit on the Sierra Nevada crest in California, near Independence, on the boundary of Fresno and Inyo counties and between Kings Canyon National Park and the John Muir Wilderness. Though not one of the range’s most famous mountains, it ranks 161st in the state by elevation and rises sharply above Dragon Lake on its north side. Named for its profile from Rae Lakes, it was first recorded as climbed in 1920, though the exact party is uncertain. Its alpine environment is shaped by Pacific storms, feeds both eastern and western watersheds, and supports endangered Sierra Nevada bighorn sheep, leading to seasonal climbing restrictions.
