Mount Rixford is a prominent Sierra Nevada summit in Kings Canyon National Park, rising sharply above Rae Lakes near Glen Pass and the John Muir Trail. At 12,887 feet, it ranks as California’s 183rd highest peak and is noted for its steep north face, with Painted Lady extending from its north ridge. The mountain was named for Dr. Emmet Rixford, a San Francisco surgeon, Sierra Club explorer, and climbing companion of John Muir, who made the first recorded ascent in 1897 with two companions. A Stanford University party adopted the name in 1899 after finding Rixford’s name in the summit cairn during the mountain’s third recorded ascent.
