Exiled Bonapartists were granted four townships of land in this area by Act of Congress on March 3, 1817. The colonists founded Demopolis in 1817 and the villages of Aigleville and Arcola soon thereafter. Their attempt to cultivate grapes and olives failed, and after a few years the settlements were practically abandoned by the French refugees.
