Debar Mountain, a three thousand three hundred seventeen-foot peak in the northern New York Adirondacks north-northeast of Paul Smiths, was both a natural summit and the site of a former fire lookout. The Conservation Department built a wooden fire tower there in 1912, and the Conservation Commission replaced it in 1918 with a thirty-five-foot Aermotor LS40 steel tower. As part of the region’s forest-fire detection network, the lookout served until aerial observation made many such stations obsolete. Operations on Debar Mountain ended after the 1970 season, and the tower was removed in 1979, leaving the mountain’s lookout era as part of its history.
