Galusha Grow, known as the Father of the Homestead Act, opened western lands to free settlement in 1862 and lived at nearby Glenwood. He served as Speaker of the House from 1861 to 1863 and as a member of Congress from 1893 to 1903. He died in 1907 and was buried in Harford Cemetery a few miles from here.
