Mweelrea
Nature
Mweelrea, on County Mayo’s Atlantic coast, rises 814 metres as the highest mountain in Connacht. Overlooking Killary Harbour, it forms the centerpiece of the horseshoe-shaped Mweelrea Mountains, including Ben Lugmore and Ben Bury, and is known for its southeast-facing corries, broad views, and dramatic position between Doo Lough and the harbour. Two corries at the head of Glenconnelly hold Lough Lugaloughan and Lough Bellawaum, whose waters flow into Killary Harbour. Geologically, Mweelrea is distinct from the Twelve Bens, with Ordovician sandstones, alluvial and delta fan deposits, and volcanic ash layers. It is also a celebrated hillwalking and climbing destination.
