Mount Stanford is a 13,979-foot peak on the Kings-Kern Divide in the Sierra Nevada within Kings Canyon National Park, ranking fifteenth in California. Its name is closely connected to Stanford University: after making the first recorded ascent on August 1, 1896, Professor Bolton Coit Brown proposed the name, and a conflict with an earlier Mount Stanford in Placer County was settled when that summit was renamed Castle Peak. The mountain also attracted Stanford president David Starr Jordan, who climbed it in 1899. Later confusion arose when a different summit was named Stanford Peak in 1911 and renamed Mount Stanford in 1982. Today it is known as an exposed class 3 scramble.
