East Vidette
Nature
East Vidette is a 12,356-foot summit in the Sierra Nevada of northern California, in a remote part of Kings Canyon National Park west of the range crest. Rising nearly 2,800 feet above Vidette Meadow in less than a mile, its north face gives the mountain a striking, sentinel-like presence over the valley. The John Muir Trail passes below its north and east sides, making it a well-known landmark for hikers. Its name derives from a word for a mounted sentry, inspired by the way East Vidette and nearby West Vidette resemble guards above the valley. A Sierra Club party first climbed the summit in 1910.
