Stratton Mountain, a 3,940-foot summit in southern Vermont, is the highest point in Windham County and the southern Green Mountains. Its wooded summit is known for a fire tower built around 1934 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, used until 1982 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992. The mountain is a landmark in American hiking history: in 1909 James P. Taylor conceived the Long Trail here, and Benton MacKaye later developed the idea for the Appalachian Trail while on Stratton during Long Trail construction. Its northern end also includes Stratton Mountain Resort, an important center for skiing, early snowboarding, and winter sports training.
