Stratton Mountain Resort
Stratton Mountain, Vermont
Pop Culture
Opened in December 1961 on Stratton Mountain in southern Vermont, this resort grew into one of the Northeast’s best-known ski destinations and later a major four-season mountain resort. Early expansion added new terrain, base facilities, and entertainment, even as access and infrastructure posed challenges. Its history reflects wider changes in American skiing, including the effects of Vermont’s Act 250 and a landmark 1977 lawsuit that raised liability concerns across the industry. Stratton became especially influential in snowboarding, becoming the first ski area to allow it, launching the first snowboard school, and hosting the Burton U.S. Open for decades. Continued investment in lifts, snowmaking, and recreation has kept it prominent.
