In 1909, at Stratton Mountain Fire Tower, James Taylor conceived the idea of a Long Trail extending from Massachusetts to Canada. In 1921, Benton MacKaye expanded that concept into a footpath linking the scenic ridges of the entire Appalachian range, giving rise to the Appalachian Trail.
