Mount Snow, formerly Mount Pisgah, became one of Vermont’s most accessible major ski destinations because of its southern location and the vision of entrepreneur Walt Schoenknecht. After finding strong early snow there in 1946, he developed the resort, which opened in 1954 and became known for constant innovation, striking attractions, and distinctive lift design. Despite ownership changes and financial struggles, the mountain expanded through areas such as Sunbrook and Carinthia and later added Haystack. Mount Snow also gained major influence in terrain parks and competitive snow sports, while continued lift and snowmaking upgrades helped sustain its prominence in Vermont and across East Coast resort culture.
