Organ Mountain is a 13,032-foot peak in the Needle Mountains of southwestern Colorado, within the Weminuche Wilderness and San Juan National Forest northeast of Durango. Rising sharply above Vallecito Creek, it gains more than 4,000 feet of relief in only 1.5 miles, creating a strikingly abrupt profile. Water from its slopes drains into Vallecito Creek, a tributary of the Los Pinos River. Its high elevation brings an alpine subarctic climate with snowy winters, cool to warm summers, and precipitation year-round, including summer thunderstorms. Officially recognized in name and recorded in publications since at least 1906, it is one of Colorado’s remote thirteeners.
