Built in 1882, this small log structure housed the Little Greenbrier School, where children from nearby families attended classes for more than 50 years. Although formal classes ended in 1935, teaching and learning continued as the school served local children and park visitors. A longtime park volunteer, Miss Elsie Burrell, came to Great Smoky Mountains National Park in 1969 at age 65 after 35 years as a teacher and school administrator, then became the schoolmarm of Little Greenbrier School and served there until age 95, teaching children about the Smoky Mountains. For years the building was also used as a church, and some pupils came from as far as nine miles away. Though Miss Elsie is gone, her excitement for learning remains in the enduring educational spirit of the Little Greenbrier School.
