Engelmann Peak is a 13,368-foot summit in Colorado’s Front Range, within Arapaho National Forest and west-southwest of Empire in Clear Creek County. It is one of Colorado’s “thirteeners,” peaks higher than 13,000 feet but lower than 14,000. The mountain was named for George Engelmann, a German-born physician and botanist who came to America in 1832 and became known for describing and naming Rocky Mountain plants. The peak was also historically called Cowles Mountain, and the spelling Englemann Peak appeared before Engelmann Peak became the established form in 1912. Its name preserves a connection between the mountain landscape and scientific exploration in the American West.
