Joseph Edward Turner, M.D. (1822–1889) founded and served as medical superintendent of the first inebriate asylum in the world at Binghamton, N.Y., from 1858 to 1866. He was the first physician to put into practical operation the treatment of inebriety as a disease, and by the methods he instituted thousands were redeemed, humanity was blessed, and the principles of Christianity were advanced.
