Mount Gould rises on the Sierra crest in eastern California just north of Kearsarge Pass, with its ridge dividing drainage between the Kings River to the west and the Owens River to the east. A Sierra Nevada thirteener, it stands near Dragon Peak and Nameless Pyramid and is commonly climbed by the south ridge via the Kearsarge Pass Trail from Onion Valley. Its first recorded ascent came in 1890 by Joseph N. LeConte, Hubert P. Dyer, Fred S. Pheby, and C. B. Lakeman. Originally named University Peak by LeConte’s party, it was renamed in 1896 for Wilson S. Gould after LeConte transferred the earlier name to a higher summit farther south.
