The Pemigewasset Wilderness is a 45,000-acre federally designated wilderness in New Hampshire’s White Mountains and the state’s largest wilderness area. Centered on the upper East Branch of the Pemigewasset River, it contains broad interior valleys enclosed by high ridges, with well-known peaks and ridge trails often lying along its edges rather than within its core. Its secluded basin, dense forest, and long brook valleys make it a major recreation landscape for year-round hiking and cross-country skiing. The area is also important for ecological recovery: once heavily logged and crossed by the White Mountains’ largest logging railroad system, it has substantially regenerated under national forest protection and later wilderness designation.
