Owl's Head is a 4,025-foot mountain in Franconia, New Hampshire, deep in the Pemigewasset Wilderness and among the most secluded peaks in the White Mountains. Although it ranks only 43rd among New Hampshire's 48 four-thousand-footers, it is especially known because no officially maintained trail reaches its summit. Hikers instead use an unofficial herd path and often remember the Owls Head Slide, which offers open views on the climb, since the summit itself is usually blocked by trees. Its remoteness often makes it the final peak for those completing the full forty-eight, despite a 2005 discovery that the traditional summit is actually a lower point.
