Mount Hancock is a White Mountains peak in New Hampshire, on the south side of the Pemigewasset Wilderness near the headwaters of the Pemigewasset River between Franconia Notch and Crawford Notch. Named for John Hancock, it was long considered one of the range’s more remote and inaccessible mountains before the Kancamagus Highway improved access. It is closely linked with a second, officially unnamed summit to the south, which the Appalachian Mountain Club long counted as a four-thousand-footer. More recent lidar measurements put that south peak’s prominence at 179 feet, complicating its status. Today, the mountain is valued for both its elevation and its backcountry setting in the White Mountain National Forest.
