Mount Carrigain stands deep in the White Mountains of New Hampshire, between Franconia Notch and Crawford Notch near the source of the East Branch of the Pemigewasset River. Named for Phillip Carrigain, New Hampshire’s secretary of state from 1805 to 1810, it is notable for a summit fire tower that provides rare open, 360-degree views across a broad backcountry landscape. The mountain also marks a divide between river systems, with its slopes draining toward both the Saco and Merrimack watersheds. Its subpeak, Vose Spur, named for George L. Vose, is a wooded, trailless summit with a talus field known for expansive views.
