At the Ouray Fault, a deep crack in the earth began the formation of Box Cañon Falls millions of years ago, causing harder rocks to move upward while soft sedimentary rocks to the north moved downward. The fault wall exposes hard Precambrian rocks that formed nearly 2 billion years ago.
