Ella Elvira Gibson of Barre, Massachusetts, lived from 1821 to 1901 and served as chaplain of the Grand Army of the Republic from 1864 to 1865. She was the first female U.S. Army chaplain and the only female officer to serve on either side during the War Between the States.
