White Mountain National Forest spans 750,852 acres in the White Mountains of the northeastern United States, mostly in New Hampshire with a small portion in western Maine. Established in 1918 under the Weeks Act after earlier federal land acquisition, it was created to protect threatened mountain landscapes, with Katherine Sleeper Walden helping secure key tracts near Wonalancet. As a national forest, it balances recreation with logging and limited commercial use. Encompassing many of New Hampshire’s highest peaks and over 100 miles of the Appalachian Trail, it is a major eastern recreation area known for extensive trails, campgrounds, wilderness areas, wildlife, and severe weather, especially around Mount Washington.
