The Hilbert Museum of California Art at Chapman University in Orange centers on California art and illustration, especially California Scene Painting, a regionalist movement that flourished from the 1930s to the 1970s in depictions of the state's landscapes, workplaces, and communities. Founded by Mark and Janet Hilbert, it opened in 2016 with a collection assembled largely from 1992 onward and now holds more than 5,000 works, including major examples by Millard Sheets, Emil Kosa Jr., Phil Dike, Milford Zornes, Rex Brandt, and Mary Blair. Its holdings also include a major private Disney art collection and other 20th-century illustration, linking fine art with film and animation history.
