Pittsfield established this site as Memorial Park in 1923 and commissioned a war memorial that was dedicated on July 8, 1926 as the Peace Memorial in tribute to the city’s sons and daughters who served in World War I. The memorial includes a 1917–1918 tribute to the loyalty and sacrifices of those who defended liberties won by their fathers, was erected by the City of Pittsfield in 1926, and bears the inscription Fidelis Ad Mortem Supra, translated as “Faithful Unto Death and Beyond.” Sculptor Henry Augustus Lukeman, an American sculptor born in Richmond, Virginia, who studied under Daniel Chester French in New York and at the Beaux-Arts in Paris, created the work; his other works include Stone Mountain in Georgia and the McKinley statue in Adams. Rededicated on May 31, 2010 after extensive restoration, it stands as a symbolic shrine for all veterans who have served gallantly in defense of their country, with additional inscriptions honoring service in World War I, World War II, Korea, and Vietnam.
